The Singapore that I know is a crammed little city of diversity. It is colourful, chaotic, and complex. People of vastly different cultural perspectives live together in close proximity, influencing and shaping each other’s thinking, feeling and being. Somewhere within this intertwined network, there are the people in this story. They come from a demographic that is rarely represented and often misunderstood. In the process of telling this story, I found myself traversing through worlds which were previously unfamiliar to me. The journey was delicate and arduous, sometimes intimidating, but more often than not, profoundly heart-opening. I feel immensely grateful to come out with a wider perspective, a softer heart and a sharper sensibility to humankind and how we all live together.

I dedicate Sunny to everyone whose worlds I have briefly touched in the making of it, and to many more I have not met, but whom I now know are all laughing, crying, struggling, fighting, loving and living in all these different pockets of tiny universes that make up our city.

This story is not about what should or should not be; what could or could not be - it is about what is. And the incredulously simple beauty that exists in that.
